CAMPAIGN 2026: Former Alabama Supreme Court Justice Jay Mitchell has announced his campaign for attorney general.

Mitchell, a Republican, was elected to the Alabama Supreme Court in 2018. He resigned from the bench last month.

In making his announcement, Mitchell said he is running to lock up violent criminals, support law enforcement, pursue mass deportations, protect the unborn and defeat the woke agenda.

Mitchell was born in Mobile and grew up in South Alabama and in Homewood. He is a graduate of Homewood High School and  Birmingham-Southern College, where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa, served as president of the student body and played  on the school’s 1995 national championship basketball team. He holds a Master of Arts from University College in Dublin, Ireland, and received his law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law.

Current Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall has served two terms and can’t run for a third consecutive term due to term limits. Marshall is running for U.S. Senate, aiming to replace U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville, who is running for governor.

Alabama’s primaries are May 19, 2026.
