Demopolis Times closure evidence of changing times

The Demopolis Times newspaper published its last and final issue one week ago Wednesday. But now that its gone — how will people in the River City get their news.

The dawn of the digital information age continues to take its toll on the newspaper industry — especially small rural papers.

The shut down marks the end of an era in the Demopolis community.

“I’m 70 years old and I know the paper’s been here since I’ve been born. So, it comes as a surprise,” said Demopolis resident Carl James.

“The newspaper is gonna be a thing of the past. The internet has really hurt the newspaper,” said Hank McWhorter.

JM Media Group brought the Demopolis Times last month.

According to an article in the paper’s final issue — the owners decided to close the paper after conducting a status and business outlook evaluation.
