There’s a six-foot-tall bundle of joy at the Alabama Safari Park.

The first giraffe calf born at the park made her presence into the world on May 8.

After a gestation period of 15-17 months, Greta delivered her first calf on May 8. Gertie weighed 115 pounds and stood five feet and seven inches at birth.

Guests visiting the Park can spot Gertie alongside Greta in the giraffe habitat. Giraffe calves nurse for up to a year and grow quickly in their first months. The park’s animal care team quickly ensured both mom and calf had everything they needed. Now thriving and full of energy, Gertie is beginning to explore and interact with her surroundings under Greta’s watchful eye.

The Alabama Safari Park is home to a growing herd of giraffes and more than 700 animals from around the world.
