Non-profit hosts back pack giveaway Saturday in Selma

A Birmingham non-profit is throwing a back-to-school block-party in downtown Selma — for the children of the Black Belt.
Executive Director Lane Harper says the Power of Life Foundation plans to hand out 2000 back packs Saturday — to help kick off the upcoming school year — right.
“The Power of Life would like to give you a start up kit for back to school, alleviate the cost and the pressure, and just allow you to have just one less thing to worry about as you go into this new year,” said Harper.
The group is hosting a drive-thru back-pack giveaway on the 1100 block of Water Avenue — starting a few blocks east of the Edmund Pettus Bridge on Franklin Street.
Harper says the event will also include the Alabama State Hornet mascot. Members of the New Orleans Pelicans G-League team — the Birmingham Squadron — and other special guests will be on hand.
“It’s going to be a big ol’ party. It’s a back to school day time party where we’re providing food. We’re providing music. We have a DJ coming all the way in from Macon, GA. So, everybody that shows up is a special guest, even you.
The event gets underway at ten Saturday morning and wraps up around 2.
The Power of Life Foundation helps address the basic needs of people living in underserved communities in Alabama — Georgia — and Florida.
