Equal Justice Initiative, Montgomery Public Schools announce reading partnership
Students in Montgomery will soon have better access to more books.
The Equal Justice Initiative and Montgomery Public Schools announced a partnership Monday to help strengthen reading skills and to expand access to high quality books.
The announcement was made at Highland Gardens Elementary School.
EJI Founder Bryan Stevenson said they have identified 133 books written by esteemed authors that are tailored specifically for first and second graders.
“We want all of these young people to have their own personal libraries to explore the things that mean the most to them, that help them find their dreams and pursue their dreams with the kind of commitment that is going to be needed in an environment where is sometimes kids that are poor and vulnerable and marginalized, don’t get the same opportunities.” said Stevenson.
“As they began to start their home libraries, this is an initial investment,” said MPS Superintendent Dr. Zickeyous Bird. “We are going to continue to to invest in those home libraries and so again we are just so excited about the contributions from Mr. Stevenson and his mark in Montgomery Public Schools.”
Stevenson said through this partnership, students in the first and second grade will be given at least two books for free that they can take home to enjoy during the holidays.
