Buddhist monks travel through Uniontown on Walk for Peace

A group of Buddhist monks are walking through Alabama on a cross-country pilgrimage to the nation’s capital.

Wal Pic1 1 The group is traveling along U.S. Highway 80 East — stopping and promoting peace in communities along the way.

It’s called the Walk for Peace. It began with one step — and literally became a journey of a thousand miles — when the group made it into Uniontown — Thursday morning.

“We walk from Fort Worth, TX. This is our 54th day now. About a thousand miles already. And we been walking like that for 20 to 25 miles per day. And today we are very grateful to be here in this town, said Venerable Panna Kara.

Wal Pic2The purpose behind the Walk for Peace — is to promote hope, harmony and healing for people everywhere.

A crowd of well-wishers greeted the monks as they arrived at Uniontown City Hall where they’ll rest and stay overnight.

“I came up with this journey, Walk for Peace, hoping that we’ll raise awareness of peace, lovingkindness and compassion to all people in this country and around the world to — maybe everybody will live in harmony and unity,” said Kara.

The city of Selma is also a stop along the Walk for Peace.

City officials expect the monks to arrive in the Queen City on Friday.
