Swiftwater rescue training program coming to Montgomery Whitewater

Montgomery County officials have announced an Innovate Alabama grant that will start a swiftwater rescue training program at Montgomery Whitewater.

Phase 1 of the program will strengthen emergency response preparedness to make Montgomery a regional leader in high-risk rescue training. Phase 1 of the $750,000 grant award will establish Montgomery Whitewater as a host training venue for credentialed public safety agencies to conduct their own swiftwater and flood-response training in a controlled, engineered environment that cannot be replicated on natural rivers.

“By investing in this program, we are investing in readiness, safety and confidence, long before an emergency ever occurs,” Montgomery Whitewater Executive Director Jason Wilson said. “None of this would be possible without the vision and the support of the Montgomery County Commission and Innovate Alabama.”

There are only two other facilities in the U.S. similar to Montgomery Whitewater. This new program is intentionally focused on first responders and public safety professionals.
