Fatal Train Collision Not the First at Wares Ferry Crossing
A Montgomery County man is dead after his vehicle collided with a train.
The crash happened at about 10:30 Friday morning on Wares Ferry Road in Montgomery County. State Troopers say there was only one person, the driver, in the car when it crossed the tracks and collided with the train. The man died at the scene. Montgomery County officials blocked off the road while troopers investigate.
Sergeant Steve Jarrett with Alabama State Troopers says the crossing has warning signals.
“It’s got visible flashing lights, audible sounds, and I believe we worked an incident of this nature about a year, year and a half ago,” he said.
In 2011, a train-vehicle collision seriously injured a Montgomery man. Back then, we heard the same complaints about the crossing.
“Especially the one down here where the wreck was. It’s just flashing lights most of the time and sometimes they work, sometimes they don’t and when a train comes down here, so I always watch it, I’m really careful about it,” said Norman Ussery, who works nearby.
Sgt. Jarrett says troopers are urging everyone to be careful when crossing train tracks.
“See what the signs are telling you, look for the flashing signals, listen for audible signals and definitely don’t try to ever beat the train,” he said.
