Fort Deposit voters head back to the polls for municipal election
From the West Alabama Newsroom…
Voters in the town of Fort Deposit went back to the polls Tuesday to chose a mayor and a member of the town council.
A judge threw out the results of the election when voters first went to the polls in August.
That decision came after it was found that hundreds of illegal absentee votes were cast in the election.
Voters say they hope that this latest election will accurately reflect the will of the people.
“Second time around I feel like you know we’re getting a better chance at getting it right this time,” said voter Betty Jean Howard.
“I appreciate them doing it for the second time because it didn’t seem like it was right in the beginning. So, I’m happy that they are doing this today.”
“I really think that there was some, some things that went wrong in that first election. And definitely it should have been rectified,” said voter Faye Stewart.
“And I certainly hope that everybody turns out today and they will vote their conscience and what’s good for this town.”
Over 400 absentee votes were cast in the August election. But only 10 absentee votes have been cast in this election.
The polls close at 7 pm.
