Fort Deposit Mayor-elect shares future plans for the town
From the West Alabama Newsroom–
The people of Fort Deposit have elected a new mayor. Action 8 News caught up with Mayor-elect Madelene Means — who shared some of her plans for the town — moving forward.
Means defeated incumbent Jacqulyn Boone in an unprecedented mayoral race.
The two faced off in the August municipal election — only to have the result over-turned due to allegations of voter fraud.
Judge Cleveland Poole threw out the election and ordered a new one — after finding over 400 absentee votes had been cast in the election.
By comparison — only ten absentee votes were cast in the election Tuesday.
“We did it,” said Means.
“The town spoke. You heard the voices of the people ask for something different.”
Means says her administration will be marked by accountability and transparency. And says the first thing she plans to do — is to assess and take an inventory of the town.
“The town can expect a audit and an accounting to make sure what is the state of Fort Deposit. And then they can expect to actually hear what that is,” she said.
Means says her top priority is to build a sense of unity in the town — so the community can move forward in a positive direction.
“We have a job to do, we have opportunities to take advantage of and we all have to be on one accord moving forward,” said Means.
“So, it’s time out for factions. It’s time out for favorites. We’re on the other side of that for Fort Deposit. And we have to keep our eyes forward and take advantage of these opportunities that are going to come.”
