State lottery bill filed in the Alabama legislature
A state lottery bill has once again been filed in the Alabama legislature.
Primarily sponsored by Sen. Merika Coleman (D-Birmingham), the bill would establish a state lottery and authorize in-person casino-style games and in-person and online sports wagering activities.
The bill does not specify where the funds would be allocated.
If passed by the legislature and later approved by the voters, the bill would also establish a commission to license and regulate all gaming activities in the state.
The bill would authorize the governor to negotiate a Tribal-State gaming compact with the Poarch Band of Creek Indians.
Sen. Coleman is joined by five other Democratic lawmakers on the bill.
Alabama is one of five states that currently does not have a statewide lottery.
