Montgomery-based grocery store chain Renfroe’s Market has announced it plans to close its location on Eastchase Parkway.

In a statement to Action 8 News, Renfroe’s says the closure follows unsuccessful lease renewal negotiations. Leaders say the company was unable to reach terms with property owners that would allow the store to continue operating in a financially responsible and sustainable manner.

“This was not an easy decision,” said Rob Renfroe, Owner of Renfroe’s Market. “We are grateful to our associates and loyal customers who have supported the Eastchase Parkway store since 2014. While we were hopeful to continue serving this community in this location, we must ensure that each store operates under terms that allow us to invest in our people, our product quality, and the long-term strength of our company.”

The grocery store chain is known for its fresh departments, in-house butchers, and customer service.

Renfroe’s has two other locations in Montgomery: one on Atlanta Highway and another on McGehee Road. Neither of those locations will be impacted.

The company say it will communicate directly with associates regarding transition details and job opportunities within other locations.

Renfroe’s on Eastchase Parkway has been open in Montgomery since 2014, when it used the Foodland name.

Originally, the store was built in the early 2000s as a location of the Birmingham-based family grocery chain Bruno’s, when that company had a major presence in most of Alabama under the Bruno’s, Food World and FoodMax banners.

When that chain went bankrupt in 2009, its stores closed, including the store at EastChase. Even though the location was relatively new, the store sat vacant until the Renfroe family open their store in that space.

Besides the EastChase store, Renfroe’s operates eight other stores, from Montgomery eastward to the Georgia state line.
