CAMPAIGN 2026: Absentee voting begins in Alabama
CAMPAIGN 2026: Absentee voting has now started in advance of the May 19 primaries in Alabama.
If you are interested in voting absentee, you first need to apply for an absentee ballot at your county election office.
Some reasons to vote absentee include if you’ll be out of your county on May 19, if you have a disability, are in the military or will be working a long shift that would prevent you from going to the polls, which would be open from 7AM until 7PM that day.
If you get an absentee ballot, you would return it, either by mail or in person, along with a photo ID. Your ballot also has to be notarized or witnessed by two adults in order for it to be counted.
The state doesn’t consider the absentee voting system as a general “vote by mail” alternative to going to the polls, and anyone who votes absentee, and also votes a second time in person, would be committing a felony.
Here are some deadlines to follow:
May 12 – Deadline to apply for absentee ballot by mail
May 14 – Deadline to apply for absentee ballot in person
May 18 – Deadline to return absentee ballot in person
May 19 – Deadline for absentee ballot to be returned by mail, by noon
May 14 – Deadline to apply for absentee ballot in person
May 18 – Deadline to return absentee ballot in person
May 19 – Deadline for absentee ballot to be returned by mail, by noon
