8 ON YOUR SIDE (WAKA) – The State of Alabama is giving grocery shoppers a break on their grocery bill from now through the end of June.

The Alabama Legislature approved waiving the state’s 2% sales tax on groceries from May 1 through June 30. That’s a $2 savings on every $100 you spend on groceries.

This tax break doesn’t apply to alcohol, tobacco or hot, prepared foods.

The tax break only applies to the state sales tax. Local taxes are still being collected. For example, in Montgomery County, a shopper would still pay 6% in local taxes, but without the additional 2% in state taxes.
