Damaging wind, large hail, tornado risk Wednesday afternoon/night
Our area was mainly dry despite widespread clouds through midday Wednesday. However, severe storms appear possible during the afternoon through Wednesday night. The Wednesday midday severe weather outlook update from the storm prediction center includes approximately the northwest half of our viewing area within an enhanced (level 3/5) severe risk. The southeast part of our area lies within a slight (level 2/5) severe risk.
Damaging wind gusts, tornadoes, large hail, and inches of rain which could lead to flooding look like the main hazards. Storms first develop across or move into west-central Alabama, then gradually slide south and east through Wednesday night in advance of a cold front. Newer model data suggests storms may linger in far south Alabama through early Thursday morning. Thursday afternoon looks mainly dry with lingering clouds on the backside of the cold front.
Friday looks mainly cloudy with more rain and perhaps storms by the afternoon. The best chances for rain may remain mainly along and south of highway 80 through Friday night. More showers and perhaps storms become scattered about our area Saturday. Mother’s day features a better chance for showers and storms as another cold front swings through Alabama.
