9th annual Boone Day to remember Montgomery civil rights legend

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WAKA) – Plans are underway for the 9th annual Boone Day to remember the life and works of the late Rev. Richard Boone of Montgomery.

Boone organized civil rights protests in Tuscaloosa, Selma and Montgomery during the Civil Rights Movement, and is credited for bringing 800 Alabama State University students to participate in the 1965 Selma-to-Montgomery voting rights march. He formed the Alabama Action Committee and was a member of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.

Boone died in 2013.

Organizers are determined to keep his memory alive with Boone Day 2026. From 2PM-4PM on Tuesday, July 7, a forum will be held at the Rosa Parks Museum. Darrin Harris will be moderator, with featured panelists Dr. Howard Robinson of Alabama State University and Dr. John Gigge of the University of Alabama.

After that, a Boone Day celebration will take place from 4PM to 7PM at the Court Square Fountain at the bottom of Dexter Avenue downtown. It will feature entertainment, vendors and food trucks. In addition, 15 men will be named as Raindrops on our Beloved Community in Rev. Boone’s memory.
