Local airports getting grant money for improvements

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WAKA) – The Alabama Department of Transportation is awarding more than $3.1 million in grants to improve 11 airports, some in our area.

ALDOT has awarded $5,336,018 through the Alabama Airport Improvement Funding Program so far in 2026.

Eligible projects may include land acquisition, runway upgrades, facility repairs, maintenance and operational improvements.

Here’s a look at some local airports getting money:

• Wetumpka Municipal Airport: $1,163,624 to build a 10-unit hangar and a taxilane
• South Alabama Regional Airport in Covington County: $573,820 to build taxilanes for hangar development
• Camden Municipal Airport: $534,812 for runway repairs
• Florala Municipal Airport: $250,239 to improve a runway

“Safe, reliable airport facilities require continued investment,” said Frank Farmer, bureau chief of ALDOT’s Aeronautics Bureau. “These grants will help local airports address important needs and maintain facilities that pilots, businesses and communities can depend on.”

These dollar amounts include state and federal funds.
