New state law to ban e-cigarettes and vapes from non-smoking areas
A new law will soon take effect that bans e-cigarettes and vapes from non-smoking areas in Alabama.
Beginning October 1, Alabama’s Clean Indoor Air Act will expand to ban electronic nicotine delivery systems, such as e-cigarettes and vaping devices, from non-smoking areas.
Vaping will be held to the same restrictions as smoking tobacco products the traditional way. That means it’ll now be prohibited from enclosed public places and sports and recreational facilities.
The bill was sponsored by State Sen. Gerald Allen. The law also renames the act the Vivian Davis Figures and Barbara Drummond Clean Indoor Air Act.
The Alabama Department of Public Health is encouraging businesses and organizations to review their existing smoking policies and to make any necessary changes for this new law.
“Between 8,000 and 9,000 Alabamians die every single year from diseases related to smoking and to nicotine. I think it’s time for all of us to step up and do the responsible thing because vaping poses a public health threat,” State Health Officer Dr. Scott Harris said.
