The City of Greenville adds ‘Autistic Child at Play signs’ across city Neighborhoods

With help from the Greenville Mayor’s office Jacquie Hamilton has acquisitioned ‘Autistic Child at Play’ signs across Greenville.

These signs are placed in residential areas as well as near busy roads to alert citizens that an autistic child may be close by and that special care must be taken– as an autistic person may not respond to their name if lost or be aware of danger.

When my son would elope, says Jacquie, we would have to get the police involved because he would be going in one direction and he would be going in another. So, my vision for the signs would make motorists and neighbors aware that there’s children with autism or residents with autism in the area.

I just want the community…. the neighborhood to know that the safety of our children is everybody’s responsibility, she says, as she reflects on the lessons she has learned while raising her now 30 year old autistic child.

So far six signs have been installed with plans of adding more in the near future.
