Woman found guilty in shooting death of her cousin

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WAKA) – A woman charged with manslaughter in the 2024 shooting death of her cousin has been found guilty.

Montgomery County District Attorney Azzie Oliver tells Action 8 News that a jury found Kawanda McDade guilty in the deadly shooting on Troy Highway.

Oliver says Natasha McDade was working as a cashier at the Circle K when she was fatally shot by Kawanda McDade.

According to surveillance video and witness testimony presented at trial, Kawanda McDade entered the store to purchase a bag of ice. After leaving, she returned and became involved in a verbal altercation with her cousin. The confrontation continued outside, where Kawanda McDade shoved Natasha McDade before pulling a gun from her purse and shooting her in the chest.

Kawanda McDade testified that she acted in self-defense and had sustained minor bruises during the altercation. The jury rejected that claim and returned a guilty verdict.

Kawanda McDade is scheduled to be sentenced by Judge Monet Gaines in October. She faces 10 to 20 years in prison.
