Johnnie Sankey wins District 3 runoff in close Montgomery City Council race
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WAKA) — In a razor-thin runoff race, Johnnie Chambers Sankey has won the Montgomery City Council District 3 seat by just 13 votes, according to unofficial results from the Montgomery County Election Center.
Sankey received 450 votes, or 50.73%, in Tuesday’s runoff election, while opponent Gregory Crawford received 437 votes, or 49.27%. A total of 887 votes were cast.
The results remain unofficial as provisional ballots still must be counted. Election results are expected to be certified in the coming days.
The District 3 seat has been vacant since June, when city officials determined that former council member Marche Johnson no longer lived in the district.
Fifteen candidates initially sought the seat. Sankey and Crawford advanced to Tuesday’s runoff after finishing as the top candidates in last month’s election.
Family and friends gathered Tuesday evening to celebrate Sankey’s victory. She said her immediate priorities include listening to District 3 residents, addressing trash and beautifying the district.
Sankey also said she looks forward to working with the other members of the City Council and is eager to begin serving.
“I just want to thank the people who have confidence in me, who believe in the vision that we have together, and I’m ready to get started,” Sankey said. “Let’s get out here and let’s do it.”
