Virtual High School Coming Soon To Pike County

It’s a digital age nowadays, where more and more schools across the state are offering online courses in their high school lesson plans.Â
Â
But, Pike County is hoping to take online learning to the next level, creating a Virtual High School.Â
Â
Starting next year, about 50 students will be able to spend half of their day in a computer lab. This is one of the first programs like it in the state.Â
Â
That’s because there are schools with online programs like the state’s- ACCESS courses, but this is one of the first public school systems to offer a program for not only accelerated students but also those that are falling behind.Â
Â
Students can move at their own place and even earn college credit. Or students can make-up classes and take career technical courses.
Â
Dr. Mark Head, superintendent’s administrative assistant said, “It’s not only about how much more we can offer which is fabulous but it’s also about being able to teach in a mode that the student’s are really receptive to and I think that this is more of that line and we are going to see more of it.”Â
Â
The program is funded locally by the school system and will cost upwards of $100,000 for the monitoring teacher and equipment. It will start in the fall.Â
