Alabama State’s APR scores please Hornet faithful

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AlabamaNews.Net) — Alabama State University officials say they’re pleased with the latest scorings from the NCAA and it’s annual academic progress ratings, or APR.

ASU says 14 of its athletics programs scored at or above the national benchmark of 930.
A total of 17 of ASU’s 18 athletics programs meet the qualifications for post-season eligibility for the upcoming 2016-17 year.

“We are again proud and salute the academic accomplishments of our student-athletes,” Alabama State Athletic Director Melvin Hines said in a news release Wednesday. “Success begins in the classroom, and Hornet Nation should be delighted in how our student-athletes represent Alabama State University. Our student-athletes continue to shine in the classroom, in competition, and in the community, and we will continue to provide resources to aid them in their success. We will remain diligent in our goal for every program to achieve postseason eligibility.”

Jaunelle White, ASU’s Senior Associate Athletic Director agrees, telling Alabama News Net’s Ben Bolton, “It takes a lot from everyone. Its an institutional effort, not just an athletic department effort. it takes a community environment, our student athletes, our coaches, our faculty, our staff, everybody helps to makes sure they have what they need in the classroom.”

The Academic Progress Rate (APR) is a four-year average based on the school’s overall student-athlete eligibility, and graduation and retention rates for student-athletes who participated during the 2011-12, 2012-13, 2013-14, and 2014-15 academic years. The APR also serves as a predictor of graduation success.
