Alabama House Vote Could Thwart Push for Impeachment
Alabama lawmakers voted to set up an impeachment process, but it’s one that could halt the current effort to oust Gov. Robert Bentley.
The House of Representatives voted 79-14 Tuesday to have the Judiciary Committee investigate impeachment grounds if 21 legislators sign impeachment articles against a state official. Eleven legislators filed articles against Bentley
Rep. Mac McCutcheon says the signature requirement will give the articles credibility. Other lawmakers agreed it should not be easy to start impeachment proceedings.
Rep. Ed Henry said he thought there were “shenanigans” to put his impeachment push aside.
Henry filed impeachment articles after the former law enforcement secretary accused Bentley of having an affair with a staffer and interfering with law enforcement business. Bentley denied the accusations, but has admitted to making “inappropriate” remarks.
