Toney’s induction into ASHOF awaits Saturday

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (ashof.com) – The former NBA All-Star Andrew Toney will be one of eight to be inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame on Saturday, May 21, 2016.

A native of Birmingham, Toney played collegiately at Southwestern Louisiana (now Louisiana-Lafayette). He was an All-American at Lafayette his senior year and was named the Southland Conference Player of the Year. He averaged 26.1 points per game in his senior season and 23.6 points for his career. He led the Rajin’ Cajuns to the quarterfinals of the NIT.

He was drafted eighth overall in 1980 NBA Draft by the Philadelphia 76ers. He played eight seasons all with the 76ers. He was named to the NBA All-Star Team two consecutive years (1982 & 1983).

In the Eastern Conference Finals in 1982 against the Boston Celtics, he scored 30 points in Game 2, 39 points in Game 4 and 34 points in Game 7. He average 26.4 points per game in that series. He helped lead the 76ers to the NBA Championship in 1982-1983, defeating the L.A. Lakers. This 76ers Team was considered by many to be one of the greatest teams ever.

He ranked second in the NBA in three point field goal percentage in 1981-82, and sixth in 1984-85. He averaged 24.4 points a game in his two NBA Finals appearances; at that time it was the 12th best in NBA Finals career scoring average. For his career he had 7,458 points and averaged 15.9 a game.

He was enshrined in the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame in 1992.

Other members of the ASHOF Class of 2016 include: James Brooks (football), David Cutcliffe (coaching), Jim Fulmer (basketball), Oscar Gamble (baseball), Martha Jones Lang (golf), Chris Samuels (football), and Calvin Smith (track and field). Edgar Welden, Chairman of the Board of the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame will receive the Distinguished American Sportsmen Award.
