Hornets’ lady booters prep for Midnight Madness kickoff
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (bamastatesports.com) – Kicking off the women’s soccer season, the Lady Hornets will officially begin their time together for the 2016 season with a special fitness test and practice set for 12:01 a.m. on Thursday at the ASU Soccer Complex in a Midnight Madness reveal of the squad.
This marks the first time that the Alabama State soccer team has decided to open a season in this manner, an event that ASU head coach Jodie Smith said he planned to liven up the program.
“I’m always looking to do something new,” Smith said. “I like to try out a few different things each season and see if they work. I thought this idea that I had would be a good way to create some excitement. It’s fun to incorporate new ideas into the program.”
Coincidentally, a new moon phase will take hold under the night skies between Wednesday night into Thursday morning.
Symbolically, it is a new moon for a new women’s soccer season as ASU will welcome 10 newcomers to the team (nine of which are freshmen and one is a junior transfer) to join 12 letterwinners for a team that has reached the SWAC Championship in two of the previous three seasons.
Forecast calls for temperatures in the upper 70s to 80 degrees with a 20 percent chance of rain.
The Lady Hornets will continue its practice schedule on Thursday with a 3 p.m. scheduled start that is free and open to the public.
