SWAC recognizes ASU Volleyball’s Coleman, Kutsch, Dorsey
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (bamastatesports.com) – Alabama State senior libero Jamie Coleman (Farmington Hills, Mich./Farmington Hills) has been named the preseason SWAC Defensive Player of the Year and First Team Defensive Specialist, while teammates sophomore Kori Kutsch (Torrance, Calif./South) was named to the preseason first team and junior middle blocker Briana Dorsey was named to the second team as the league announced its awards Friday.
“I am very proud of the selections of our young ladies,” said head coach Penny Lucas White. “I feel that Jamie is a proven champion over the years and entering her senior year it says a lot about, who she is and what she brings to the court.”
Coleman has not arrived to preseason camp as of yet. The Business Marketing major had some grand intern opportunities this past summer. She interned at Harvard as well as with Google. Coach Lucas White had a few good things to say about Jamie.
“Jamie is my brianiac. She’s a mover and a shaker. Although she won’t be reporting to camp until August 12, I know she will be ready.”
Coleman has been a stalwart at libero for the Lady Hornets throughout her three seasons, picking up a total of 572 digs over her freshman, sophomore and junior campaigns. Coleman notched 214 digs, which was good for an average of 2.49 digs per set, ranking her 10th in the conference. As a sophomore, she ranked eighth in the conference with 2.54 digs per set.
Meanwhile, Kutsch earned preseason first-team setter honors after picking up the 2015 SWAC Newcomer of the Year, 2015 SWAC Second Team selection (Setter) and the 2015 SWAC All-Tournament Team selection. She ranked sixth in the SWAC in assists per set (5.79 per set), ranked fourth in SWAC only matches in assists per set (7.40 per set), ranked first on the team in assists (753) and assists per set, ranked second on the team in aces (21).
“With Kori being a freshman last season, with her receiving Newcomer of the Year Honors last season, and her coming back this year contributing to the team is a very big honor for us and her,” Lucas-White said.
Dorsey received second team honors after finishing the season ranked third on the team in total blocks (78), third in blocks per set (0.78 per set), and sixth in kills (123).
“Briana was the Freshman of the Year her freshman year and now that she is a rising junior. I see bigger and better things coming for her,” said Lucas-White.
