Biscuits puff Smokies for third straight win
KODAK, Tenn. (biscuitsbaseball.com) – It took 12 innings, but the Biscuits beat the Tennessee Smokies for a third-straight game, 7-5, to win the series on Sunday night at Smokies Stadium in Kodak.
Brent Honeywell was on the mound for the Biscuits, and the right-hander allowed three runs on six hits with seven strikeouts through five innings of work in a no decision. Michael Wagner threw a no decision on the other side for the Smokies, allowing five runs on eight hits through five innings as well.
Though the Smokies scored first, the Biscuits would rally back to make it 3-1 in the fourth thanks to a Kean Wong RBI-triple. An inning later, after a Kelly Dugan home run tied the game at three, Cade Gotta stepped up and delivered a two-run triple of his own to make it 5-3 Biscuits.
Down 5-4 in the ninth, the Biscuits turned to Jaye Chapman to close things out, but the right-hander would allow a two-out game-tying infield single to pinch-hitter Ian Happ that sent the game to extra innings.
After a scoreless tenth and eleventh by both clubs, the Biscuits put runners at first and second with two outs in the 12
th for Jake DePew, and the Montgomery catcher laced another two-run triple, the third triple of his career, into right-center field to hand the 7-5 lead back to the Biscuits. Montgomery entered the night with no more than one triple in any one game this season, and ended the night with three-each a two-run base hit.
Jeff Ames would enter in the bottom of the twelfth and earned his fifth save as the Biscuits kept pace with the Chattanooga Lookouts in the wild card standings. The Biscuits will try to make it four in a row for the fifth time this season on Monday night when Chris Kirsch (5-5) takes on Brad Markey (6-6) at 7:05 PM.
