Some Selma Police Officers Are No-Shows for Work
Police Chief John Brock says five officers were no shows. He says senior staff and administrators were called out to handle patrols and answer calls in their place.
This comes after a letter began circulating this week with officers demanding a pay raise and a meeting with city leaders. Chief Brock says there is a plan to make sure the city remains safe.
“The citizens of Selma should feel safe,” Brock told Alabama News Network. “That’s all I want. That’s all I care about. I’m a police officer, not a politician. All I want is to make sure the citizens are safe. They are safe. I feel safe. I live inside the city limits, my family is here. I want them to feel safe and we will, whatever it takes, the citizens will be protected,” he said.
The Selma police Department has 47 sworn officers. The starting salary is $12.90 an hour, about $2 dollars less than the state average.
Brock says the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office and State Troopers have offered their assistance if needed.
