Birmingham Youth Pastor Charged for Impersonating a Police Officer

A popular youth pastor has been indicted on a charge of impersonating a police officer.

WVTM-TV reports that a Jefferson County grand jury indicted Matt Pitt in May, and the case was docketed this week.

Pitt is accused of using an honorary Jefferson County Sheriff’s badge when a man asked about an abandoned rifle in the woods near Pitts’ home in June 2013.

Pitt pleaded guilty in 2012 to trying to impersonate a police officer in another county. The judge in the original case revoked Pitt’s probation after hearing about the new allegations.

Pitt’s bond is set at $15,000.

Pitt started a ministry called “The Basement” in 2004, and it grew into one of the nation’s largest youth ministries.
