Selma Voters Elect New Leadership

WAL MAYORREAX VOFrom the West Alabama Newsroom–

Big changes may be on the way to the city of Selma after voters elect a new mayor and four new members to the city council.

State representative Darrio Melton is Selma’s new mayor-elect after defeating former mayor James Perkins, Jr. in a runoff election Tuesday.

Melton won with more than 60% of the vote.

Residents say they are optimistic about new leadership for the city. They say crime and jobs are the most important issues that need to be addressed moving forward.

“The big concern with Selma’s future between me and my friends is a good plan to fight crime in this area,” said Smitherman.

“The next concern is industry. We need industry to put some of our young people to work so they won’t be committing crimes.”

Election winners officially take office November 7th.
