Taking Action Against Crime: Unsolved Murders, Shekrian Wilkerson

Alabama News Network is Taking Action Against Crime with unsolved murders. It’s part of a series we’re bringing you over the next four weeks in hopes of generating new leads to solve these cold cases.

We start in Montgomery, where Shekrian Wilkerson was found dead inside her car earlier this year. Now, the family is pleading for the person who killed her to turn themselves into authorities.

Shekrian Wilkerson’s family waited all night for her to come back home after a night out. That waiting turned into their biggest nightmare. A friend, sister, a mother… was found murdered; a family left without answers as to who could’ve killed her.

Alabama News Network was able to sit down with Wilkerson’s family.

“My mom gave me a gift. And I’m going to keep it,” Said 14-year-old La’Cynthia Wilkerson. It was the gift of song.

La’Cynthia shocked us by beginning to sing Whitney Houston’s I Will Always Love You dedicated to her mother, Shekrian Wilkerson, during our interview.

“So I’ll go. But I know. I’ll think of you every step of the way. And I… will always love you. [I] will always love you…”

La’Cynthia says singing, memories and photos’s are what she and her four brothers and sisters have to help remember her mom. Wilkerson’s sister, Victoria, has since been taking care of the children.

“They’re more stronger than me. Way stronger than me. And sometimes it’s kind of hard to explain why your mom is gone,” Said Victoria Wilkerson.

She’s been gone since January 26, 2014. That’s when police say they found Wilkerson murdered inside her car in this field on Davenport Road. They say someone shot her in her stomach.

This photo was taken the day before her murder. If you look closely, you’ll notice she was four months pregnant with twins — three lives lost.

RELIVING THE CRIME SCENE

Our crews accompanied Victoria, as she visited the scene for the first time since her sister was found dead.

It was a windy day. Victoria described being there as ‘eerie.’ The raw emotion was evident as she stared into the open field of grass her sister was found in off Davenport road with tears rolling down her face.

“And it’s kind of hard that she’s not here. The things that we did together, I don’t even like to do them no more. Celebrate my birthday? I didn’t even do it. I just locked up in my room,” Said Victoria as she cried.

Montgomery Police and the District Attorney’s Office hope to bring closure to the Wilkerson family by finding the person responsible for Shekrian’s death.

“You have three lives lost because of some stupid incident. Somebody who had no regard for human life. It’s really tragic and really devestating to this family. That’s why it’s so important to get the information we need to solve this crime,” Said Montgomery County DA, Daryl Bailey.

Because until then, this family will be left with questions and tears. Hearts, they say, will be hard to mend…

“I just want peace. I want to be able to sleep sometimes,” Said La’Cynthia Wilkerson.

“My mom just comes and pops up into my head and I start thinking about her and I start to cry,” Said Wilkerson’s son, 10-year-old Patrick Jeter.

“It breaks your heart to know that these kids’ mom is gone… and they will never see her again,” Said Victoria Wilkerson.

The District Attorney’s Office says it believes Wilkerson was not driving in the car alone at the time of her death. They think whoever was in the passenger seat, led her to the field where they shot and killed her.

If you have any information on Shekrian Wilkerson’s murder, you’re asked to call Crimestoppers at 215-STOP or the Montgomery County District Attorney’s office at  832-2550.

There is also an $11,000 reward for anyone with information leading to an arrest in this case.
