Greg Gunn’s Family Speaks Out After Officer Indicted For Murder
We learned Friday that a Montgomery police officer has been indicted for murder.
Officer Aaron Smith shot and killed a black man on February 25th, and the family is speaking out today.
It’s been almost one year since Greg Gunn was shot and killed by Officer Aaron Smith.
While details have been few, a grand jury found that there’s enough evidence to send the case to trial.
Family members say they’re happy to see the case move forward.
“We want justice. And if you have committed a crime and there’s evidence there. We want justice and we want a speedy trial,” said Ja’Mel Brown.
Brown is Greg Gunn’s nephew. Gunn’s mother asked him to speak with us about the indictment and what it means for the family.
While the process may be slow, Brown says he’s still encouraged by what he sees.
“I think they’re going about making things right. They want to make sure all the evidence, everything lines up right. They’ve got their ducks in order,” said Brown.
The shooting death happened at the same time as several other high profile police killings across the country.
It’s a topic that’s gained national attention, and Brown says Montgomery is handling the case in the best way possible.
“This is a model for other cities across the country to see that Montgomery Alabama, we’re about business down here and if something like this does take place we know how to come together and mend things. That’s why I do compliment our mayor and our police chief and the whole team down at city hall,” said Brown.
We’ve reached out to Officer Smith’s attorney for comment, but our calls were not returned.
No word yet on when the case will go to trial.
