Boothe, Williams District 89 Race Too Close To Call

This video is no longer available.

It’s one of the closest races in the state. And while the other local races in Pike County were won by a landslide, the Alabama House District 89 race is still too close to call.

Incumbent Alan Boothe and Joel Lee Williams faced of 16 years ago. That race also ended in a close vote. And once again out of about 11,000 votes less than a hundred separate the two.

Workers in the Pike County Board of Registrars are busy verifying provisional ballots. These are the votes that are cast when there’s a question of the voter’s eligibility, and will be the final factor in who will represents District 89.

Only 95 votes separates Joel Lee Williams and Alan Boothe. It’s a race too close to call for who will represent Pike and a sliver of Dale County in the Alabama House of Representatives. Election officials must process the provisional ballots with a fine tooth comb.

There’s no official number of how many votes will count. The final tally will come by next Wednesday. That means a waiting game for the District 89 candidates.

Williams wasn’t in town for an on camera interview, but he tells Alabama News Network that he’s trusting in the process and is holding out hope. Boothe’s campaign says he feels optimistic about his lead.

Lance Hyche, Rep. Alan Boothe’s Campaign Manager said, “We were thrilled to come out with a victory on Tuesday a 95 vote margin there are still some ballots that are outstanding. There’s a process to count those ballots we hope everyone’s vote is counted and we will wait till Wednesday to get the final results but we are confident that we are going to grow our margins and win this race.”

There will be an automatic recount if the candidates are only separated by less than half a percent. That’s right around 55 votes.
