Preparations Underway for Montgomery Half Marathon
The Montgomery Half Marathon and 5k are just a few days away. This time last year, officials were preparing for a full marathon. Race Director Hardy Sellers says this year they decided to scale back.
“Truly we need a marathon,” he explained, “but right now we just need to have an excellent race.”
He says the decision was made after numbers for the race weren’t as high as organizers hoped they would be. This year, Sellers says they’re taking a new approach by catering to people who aren’t necessarily competitive runners.
As of Monday, Sellers says this year’s numbers are up about 350 participants. He hopes to have 1500 people signed up for the race by Saturday. He says if the number of participants continues to grow, they hope to bring the full marathon back in the future.
