Salvation Army Honors Volunteers at Annual Dinner

The Salvation Army gave back Thursday night to the people who give so much to them.
It was the annual volunteer dinner held at Frazer United Methodist Church. Guests enjoyed a speakers, music, and a good meal. More than 45 hundred volunteers served The Salvation Army in some way throughout the past year.
One of those volunteers was Martha Poole Simmons, who has been volunteering with the Angel Tree year after year.
“Several years ago, I volunteered to just sort the toys and pack them. And then I noticed they really needed more volunteers, so I volunteered to recruit them. So now I call people and anywhere I go or wherever I am, I say ‘would you like to help?’ So that’s really fun to get people to sack the toys and take them out to the cars and that sort of thing,” said Simmons.
Major Walter Strong says the volunteers keep the organization running.
“They are the army behind us. We couldn’t do anywhere near what we do in this community without all the volunteers. And they run the gamut. We even have homeless volunteers, who volunteer and help to the wealthy in the community. Just a wide range of people,” said Strong.
