Troy Makes List Of ‘Most Dangerous Cities’?

A new report lists some of Alabama’s most dangerous cities.

It comes from a popular real estate blog and you may be surprised at where your city ranks on the list.

Here’s a look at the list from Movoto, a company based out of California.

It used FBI 2012 crime stats to come up with the report. As you can see Selma came in at number four and while Montgomery is not in the top ten, Troy made the list at number nine- which has some people there surprised.

Troy police say they numbers are accurate but dated, since they are from 2012.

Lt. Bryan Weed, Troy Police said, “We did have 115 violent crimes in 2012 but that’s just one year. When you look at the previous year it was 141 so it had actually gone down in 2012 and in 2013 that number was 59.”

Police credit the decrease in part to the addition of 7 new positions since 2011.

The population used in the rankings is another reason Troy police say their spot on this list is skewed.
It’s only accounting for a small portion of their coverage area (26 miles), because that’s the population from the US Census for Troy city limits. But Troy police covers 160 square miles, so the ratio of crime may not be accurate.
