From the West Alabama Newsroom– People in Selma kick off the New Year by commemorating the 152nd anniversary of the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation.
Organizers say the event celebrates freedom and equality and the people who fought and died in an effort to achieve it.
They say the event also celebrates the accomplishments blacks in this country have made since the proclamation freeing the slaves was issued by President Abraham Lincoln.
“You have to understand that its not just about the Emancipation Proclamation, its about our fight for freedom in this country from the time that we set foot in this country,” said event chairperson Maggie Drake Peterson.
The event also honored several community activists and encouraged political participation.
