The Latest: Qatar sends high-level delegation to Afghanistan

The Middle Eastern State of Qatar, which has played an outsized role in Afghanistan since the Taliban’s sweep to power on Aug. 15, has sent a delegation to Kabul. It is the highest diplomatic level delegation to visit the Afghan capital since the Taliban announced their interim Cabinet. Taliban political spokesman Suhail Shaheen tweeted Sunday about the high-level delegation, saying it included Sheikh Mohammad bin Abdur Rahman Al-Thani, the deputy prime minister who is also Qatar’s foreign minister. He met with Taliban Prime Minister Mullah Mohammad Hasan Akhund. The Taliban have maintained a political office in the Qatar capital of Doha since 2013.

The Taliban flag is fluttering over the Afghan presidential palace on the same day the U.S. and the world marks the 20th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks. The milestone anniversary Saturday takes place just weeks after the chaotic U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan and the return to power of the Taliban, the faction that sheltered the al-Qaida terror network founded by Osama bin Laden that carried out the attacks. The Taliban’s new prime minister Mohammad Hasan Akhund raised the flag in a ceremony at 11 a.m. local time on Saturday. The militant group also painted their white backdrop flag on the entry gate to the U.S. Embassy building.
