Should Thanksgiving Shopping Be Outlawed?

On Thanksgiving Day, many stores in our area will open up for early holiday shoppers. That sometimes gets some backlash from customers or employees, but in some states, it’s illegal to open at all Thanksgiving Day.
The so-called “blue laws” prevent supermarkets and big box stores from opening their doors in Maine, Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Many of those laws date back decades. But should Alabama legislators propose those laws here? We asked some Montgomery residents what they think.
“No, I’m not for shopping on Thanksgiving, you know, but I don’t know about a law, I think the stores should make that decision themselves,” said Gloria Frank.
“Probably so, so people can start being with their families and spending more time with their family. Family time is very important. No, I’m going to be with my family, eating turkey,” said Vasto Woods.
“I don’t know if I agree with the law, I think that’s kind of our freedom as Americans to do what we want. I personally disagree with shopping on Thanksgiving,” said Madison Paxton.
There have been some ballot measures in states that outlaw Thanksgiving shopping to repeal that law, but all of them have been voted down.
