State Sen. Cam Ward Pleads Guilty to DUI

A leader in the Alabama state Senate has pleaded guilty to a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol.
Sen. Cam Ward entered the plea Wednesday in Alabaster municipal court. Â The Republican from Alabaster says he deeply regrets what happened and wants to accept responsibility.
Ward must pay a $2,400 fine; place an ignition interlock device in his car; perform community service; and submit to random drug tests for six months.
Ward says he doesn’t yet know if he will lose his driver’s license.
Police arrested Ward in his hometown on July 1. Ward has said he was using alcohol as a “crutch” and entered a treatment program.
Ward is chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee. He sponsored legislation this spring to overhaul Alabama’s crowded prison system.
