AUM downs Faulkner’s Lady Eagles 67-51 in SSAC tourney

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (aumathletics.com) — Jatoria Carter scored a game-high 32 points and Reggotta Craig recorded a double-double of 20 points and 17 rebounds, as the Auburn Montgomery women’s basketball team defeated Faulkner 67-51 in the quarterfinals of the Southern States Athletic Conference Tournament Thursday. 

NOTES
• With the win, the Warhawks improved to 23-8 on the season and will now take on No. 2 seed Loyola Friday afternoon.

• The loss ended the Lady Eagles’ season at 13-16 overall.

• The win marked the first SSAC Tournament victory for AUM since a 45-32 win over Brewton-Parker on Feb. 29, 2012.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS

• Carter finished 12-of-26 from the field, including 3-of-8 from distance, in the contest. She added seven rebounds, six assists and five steals.

• Craig notched her 14th double-double of the season, while also contributing three assists, two steals and a block.

• Marren Schwartz did not score in the contest, but pulled down nine rebounds, including five offensive.

• Faith Legate (18) and Erichea Barnes (16) scored in double figures for the Lady Eagles.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• AUM raced out to a 10-4 lead in the opening 4:11 of the first quarter, capped by a Withrow trey. Faulkner closed the deficit to two points, 10-8, with a 4-0 run, but the Warhawks closed the period with a 9-4 run and led 19-12 after one quarter.
• The Lady Eagles chipped away at the lead in the second quarter, outscoring the Warhawks 15-10 in the period. Faulkner used a 6-0 run to close the quarter, holding AUM scoreless for the final 5:01 and trailed by just two, 29-27, at halftime.

• The Warhawks pulled away in the third quarter, outscoring the Lady Eagles 16-3 in the first 8:44 of the quarter. AUM led 47-36 after 30 minutes.

• Faulkner trimmed the deficit to as few as six points, 53-47, with 5:26 remaining on a trey by Barnes. However, the Warhawks again used a big spurt, a 14-4 run, to close the game and provide the final margin.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

• AUM converted just 26-of-71 shots from the floor, a percentage of just .366. The Warhawks struggled from distance, hitting only 6-of-27 attempts.
• Faulkner made only 32.1 percent of its shots from the field, hitting 17-of-53.

• AUM forced 21 turnovers, leading to 22 points. The Warhawks committed just 10 miscues in the game.

• The Warhawks held a 39-35 advantage on the glass, including a 17-12 lead in offensive rebounds.

• The Warhawks will take on No. 2 seed Loyola in the SSAC Tournament semifinals at 5 p.m. Friday at the Multiplex.
