Tuskegee hits road for Stillman weekend series
TUSKEGEE, Ala. (goldentigersports.com) — After 12 days off, the Tuskegee University baseball team returns to action on the road this weekend facing Stillman College in a key Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference series beginning Saturday with a doubleheader.
First pitch is scheduled for 12 noon on Saturday and 1 pm on Sunday.
Tuskegee (6-15, 4-2 SIAC) was scheduled to play Selma University last week but had the game cancelled by the Bulldogs, which meant the Golden Tigers last played on March 20 against Lane College in their series finale.
The Golden Tigers will come in to the series well rested and will send Trey Nelson (2-2, 5.22 ERA), Jordyn Thomas (1-0, 5.87 ERA) and Joseph Mauldin (2-4, 7.42 ERA) to the mound this weekend. The trio all earned wins in their series against Lane, with Mauldin being awarded the SIAC Player of the Week for his 17 strikeout performance.
Nelson has won his last two conference starts – over Kentucky State and Lane – to propel the Golden Tigers to fourth in the West Division standings.
Tuskegee will be looking to extend their season-best three game winning streak when they hit the field Saturday against a Stillman (9-20, 5-4 SIAC) coming off a series sweep of LeMoyne-Owen.
Ricky Green, who was awarded the SIAC Player of the Week the last time Tuskegee played, continues to lead the team in hitting at .392 with six extra base hits and seven runs batted in. Freshman Christian Marshall is hitting .318, while Elgin Woodside is hitting .314 with a pair of homeruns and team-leading 13 runs batted in.
The Golden Tigers also get a lift this week with the return of senior outfielder, and Preseason All-SIAC performer, Alexander Henderson. The senior missed the last 10 games with an arm injury, but returns hitting .273 this season in just 22 plate appearances.
