Hornets’ linksters look to SWAC Championship repeats

ALEXANDRIA, La. (bamastatesports.com) – No matter the day or the week, every shot, every form of preparation always points to this week in April for the Alabama State golf programs.

Finally, that week is here as the Alabama State women’s and men’s golf programs seek to repeat as league champions as the Southwestern Athletic Conference Golf Championships begin Monday at 8 a.m.

The Lady Hornets are seeking their fourth straight SWAC title and fifth in six years in the 36-hole event at Links On The Bayou Golf Club (par 72, 5,884 yards). The men’s team is seeking its fifth straight league title in the 54-hole event at Oak Wing Golf Club (par 72, 7,043 yards).

“We have prepared for those ‘3 Days In April,’” Alabama State head golf coach Gary Grandison said in referring to the yearly mantra leading into the league’s championship event. “Our women seem ready to peak, and I like how our men are playing overall.”

The ASU Women won events at Texas Southern as well as the Women’s Collegiate Classic. The ASU women also competed in tournaments hosted by Bucknell, UAB, and Murray State during the season.

The men’s team won tournaments at the Black College Hall of Fame event, along with tourneys at Tennessee Martin and Texas Southern. The Hornets played another strong schedule, competing events hosted by Missouri, San Diego State, UC-Riverside among the fall-spring schedule.

“Our schedules have allowed our student-athletes to compete on higher levels of collegiate golf to better develop their games, as well as prepare for postseason play,” Dr. Grandison said. “Student-athlete development is the heart of our program’s mission.”
