Biscuits fall from 1st with 3-2 loss to Mississippi Braves
PEARL, Miss. (biscuitsbaseball.com) – The Biscuits lost their first series of the second half falling to the Mississippi Braves on Thursday night at Trustmark Park by a score of 3-2.
Chris Kirsch got the start for the Biscuits and produced a solid outing going five innings and allowing just two runs on two hits in the no decision. Danbsy Swanson’s sacrifice fly opened up the scoring in the bottom of the first, and Jacob Schrader’s solo home run an inning later made it 2-0 Mississippi.
That is how it would remain until the top of the sixth, when the Biscuits finally got to M-Braves starter Lucas Sims, loading the bases for Patrick Leonard. The Biscuits third baseman stepped up and drove a pitch into deep left-center field for a game-tying two-out, two-run ground-rule double. It was clutch hitting, but the one-hop over the wall actually hurt the Biscuits who likely would have scored three runs had the hit been a regular double.
The M-Braves would load the bases themselves in the bottom half of the seventh, and Brad Schreiber would walk Dustin Peterson to plate the go-ahead and game-winning run. The Biscuits looked like they had another rally going in the top of the ninth when Leonard reached on a leadoff single, but it was not to be, as Tommy Coyle went down looking for the final out.
The Biscuits will try to get out of Mississippi on a high note in game five of the series on Friday with Yonny Chirinos (2-0) taking on Sean Newcomb (4-5) at 7:00 PM
