Neighborhood holds meeting about proposed mosque

The East Montgomery Islamic Society wants to build a new mosque in East Montgomery.  The mosque would be built in the 8700 block of Vaughn Road near Deer Creek neighborhood.

The proposal for the 6000 square feet mosque has some neighbors in Deer Creek upset.

Aya Zaied of the East Montgomery Islamic Society says they’ve received many complaints about the proposal.

“The gravel, the noise, the lights, the property values for the neighborhood,” she explained.

Currently members meet at a rented office space on Taylor Road but they say they are ready for their own space.

The Deer Creek Neighborhood Association had a meeting Thursday night to discuss the proposal.

Alabama News Network was not allowed inside the meeting but residents on both sides of the issue shared their thoughts after it ended.

The proposal should be discussed at the next city board of adjustments meeting Thursday.
