Former Trojan Sophie Kleeman captains team to Australian title
TROY, Ala. (troytrojans.com) – Former Troy women’s basketball player Sophie Kleeman captained the Newcastle Hunters to the 2016 Molton Waratah League title with a 55-50 win over the Illawarra Hawks on Sunday.
The win avenged a loss to the Hawks in the next to last game of the regular season; it was the only loss the Hunters suffered as the squad finished the year 17-1. Kleeman, who played for Troy from 2009-13, was named a Waratah League All-Star while averaging 14.2 points in 18 games. She scored 10 points and posted three assists and two steals in the title game.
The Waratah League is a semi-professional basketball league in New South Wales, Australia. It sponsors both men’s and women’s championships.
Kleeman, Newcastle native, ranks eighth in Troy’s Division I history with 237 career assists and stands 10th with 88 career made 3-pointers. She led the Sun Belt in minutes played as a sophomore, but a series of injuries decreased her playing time in her final two seasons.
For her career in the Waratah League, Kleeman has played in 78 games and has averaged 10.7 points.
