Piggly Wiggly Celebrates 100th Anniversary

It’s a celebration for Piggly Wiggly grocery stores across the area. It’s the store’s 100th year in business.

The first Piggly Wiggly store was opened in Memphis, Tennessee in 1916. Clarence Saunders was the founder of the store.  Saunders introduced shoppers to a different way of shopping-at that time by allowing them to serve themselves instead of store clerks. Employees in troy, say they enjoy working at their locations serving their customers.

“We’ve been here in troy for the past 5 or 6 years – two locations. I’ve worked here for 4 years myself and I’ve enjoyed it ever since,” says Manager Bryan Strickland of Troy’s Piggly Wiggly.

Many doubted Saunders succeeding with Piggly wiggly. Today the grocery store chain has over 600 locations in the U.S
