ASU’s Coleman, Bennett earn weekly SWAC honors

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (bamastatesports.com) – Both Jamie Coleman and Bayle Bennett earned their first SWAC honors on Wednesday for their impressive performances during the Wildcat Classic hosted by Arizona.

Coleman, the 5-5 lone senior libero from Farmington Hills, Mich., notched her first Defensive Player of the week honor as she wrangled an impressive 27 digs in three matches over the weekend.  In the last match of the tournament, Coleman tallied 12 digs and one assist against SMU.  For her impressive digging effort and serve receive, Coleman was named to the Wildcat Classic All-Tournament Team.

We rely so much on Jamie,” said head coach Penny Lucas-White.  “Every week she’s always there nurturing the team, supporting the team and she carries us when she needs to.  To have Jamie as our lone senior she is doing above and beyond what the title captain means.  She is really doing a great job for us as well.  As we continue to get excited about what’s ahead for our Lady Hornets.”

Joining Coleman this week is freshman Bayle Bennett which earned SWAC Newcomer of the week.  Bennett led the Lady Hornets in kills, tallying 19 of them while adding 17 digs during the University of Arizona Wildcat Classic. Her best game was against SMU, where she put down 10 kills, adding four digs and three block assists in the loss. For her efforts, she was named to the Wildcat Classic All-Tournament Team.

“I am so impressed with Bayle’s play so far,” stated Lucas White.  “She has such an upside to her that it’s going to be exciting to watch her grow throughout her time here at Alabama State.”

The Lady Hornets will return to action this week when they host the ISTAP Collegiate Cup Invitational.
