A violent weekend in Selma leaves one man dead, another man behind bars and two people hurt.

A shootout between rival gang members early Saturday morning on the 1200 block of Alabama Avenue ends with one man dead and another man behind bars.

Dallas County District Attorney Michael Jackson says 33 year old Lamont “Gucci” Chapman of Selma was shot and killed in the shooting and 27 year old Ronald Johnson of Selma is charged with his murder.

“Things are seriously getting out of hand around here,” said Jackson. “These gunslingers have to be taken off the street its just no ands, ifs and buts. You can’t be soft on these gunslingers.”

Selma Police Chief John Brock says authorities are also investigating a shooting on the 2600 block of Etheredge Avenue that injured a 21 year old woman.

“She was at a family event, a group of guys came up and started shooting into the crowd and she got shot in the arm,” he said.

“She was transported to the hospital by private vehicle and treated and admitted to the hospital.”

Brock said a 55 year old man was hurt in yet another shooting.

“He didn’t know anything. He knew he had been shot. Don’t know where it happened at, don’t know the suspects. Don’t know anything,” said Brock.

DA Jackson says the best way to stop the violence in the community is by cracking down on gangs.

“You can’t pat them on the hand and say look ya’ll don’t do that,” he said.
